I had to think of Plec's thread "the covenient producer" soft synths are convenient! They make sounds like you hear on records, they never do those sounds that can blow up your tweeters, or are useless. The filter has an overdrive knob but it sounds terrible.Ģ: The way it looks, which borders on intolarable. So I'm test driving it but I have 2 gripes already:ġ: Within 10 minutes I was making sounds that sound exactly like every other Electro/Tech/house record that's around now, very very clean. I reckon it's distortion (solid state distortion is CPU intensive to model correctly) and parasitic properties, the way all the components interact because they are all part of the same physical circuit.īy the way I tried the Sylenth, and I was really impressed.

I'd rather hear something new.īut lately I have hooked up my analogue stuff again and it has a presence that the software synths do not have. Also I don't think a software synth has to be a replica of something that already exists. I'm all for computers, modelling, digital, virtual, circuit bending, holographic! And of course I'd rather have convenience & ability to automate, preset and recall than have to mess around with MIDI to CV converters, MIDI timing problems, latency problems. Either way, both the Arturia example and h/w mini-moog are fine sound sources.įirst of all, I'm not a purist I don't sit around listening to records from the 60's al misty eyed, I think those records sound tired. If you do it, I'd be interested to find out how many other could do it to, which is what I'm sort of getting at.

I am talking within a full and complete mix here as a lead, seq or bass of a track, not a osc comparison. When or if I get another h/w Minimoog, I will certainly post up a test. The MoogerFooger processors are legendary in the studio world and would really bring something fresh to the UAD arsenal, even if no actual synth is ever developed.Hi Eric, Īnyway, it´s awesome to see UA doing something together with Moog. The difference here is Arturia has not achieved the same level of excellence (btw, Creamware´s filter, though good, is easy to distinguish from a real Mini filter). Mind you, I am not a softsynth hater in the least bit and have in fact conducted on-line tests of my own that demonstrated you cannot pick a Minimoog oscillator apart from a Creamware Minimax oscillator. There isn´t even a question in mind on this one, I will pick the Moog out every single time. Send the test over, I bet you $100 I can pick them apart. I am that confident to say that if I rendered out a second mix of a track I did using a real Mini-Moog rather than the Arturia one, very few (if any) could really tell (without guessing).I´ll bite. I go out of the VSTi-PC at -3dB for mantain the full bit resolution and tracking into DAW at -8dB (the homemade-box is very usefull for the volume control). If I need little EQ correction (expecially when I track the drums-vsti for to remove boxiness or the Korg Legacy muddyness) I use the racked SSL EQ (by 4000 console) or Portico 5033 inserted between preamp and homemade-box. (the plugins and VSTi works better at 96Khz and 32bit)

Mytek DA96 -> Discrete Preamp (I can choose between Neve1073 or API512) -> Thermionic Phoenix (for valve flawor and little-gentle compression) -> homemade box -> LavryBlue AD DAW.

Mytek DA96 -> Valve preamp (I can choose between ADL600 or UA2-610) -> homemade box (with I/O sowter transformer and GoldPoint volume control) -> LavryBlue AD conveter for tracking into DAW. Wizoverb (with HDR Studio impulse at 4% 0.6sec.) this give the sense of a real synth that sounds into studio room Oxford Inflator (with 20% effect and 30% curve) this give fullness Well, I open the Minimoog VSTi into a channel of Chainer, into FX insert I put: For example, I want to use Minimoog by Arturia.

In this PC I use Chainer ( for run VST-instruments because it is the most transparent program of this type (I have try V-Stack but it has less bottom end). The system run always at 96Khz/32bit (yes, I know that the converter work at 24 but now I tell you why 32bit.). I have a dedicated PC for VSTi with Mytek DA96 converter.
